How can I color or stain an aluminum sheet?

I need to paint a picture on aluminum sheet metal. Want a 4 mm sheet of silver aluminum and need to have a black drawing on the surface. I would really like that the design be etched into the metal in black, so that it becomes permanent. Is this possible to do without paunts and varnish?
