Whats the best strategy (in laymans terms) to build a ranger/rogue in ddo?

im just kinda going melee/sneak attack but even with high dex im kinda squishy, and i have virtually no rogue skills to be a trap monkey. can i be an effective melee dps or should i rethink my character path?
